$3 million to support on-farm GHG emissions reductions
Agropur and Sollio Agriculture invest more than $3 million to support on-farm GHG emissions reductions
To mark Co-op Week, Agropur Cooperative and Sollio Agriculture, the agricultural division of Sollio Groupe Coopératif, are announcing a joint investment of more than $3 million to deliver on their climate commitments and accelerate reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across their value chains. Rooted in the cooperative model, this initiative puts Agropur dairy farmer members and the Sollio cooperative network at the heart of the action by giving them the tools to adopt promising practices and achieve concrete on-farm reductions.
“In addition to supporting our members’ sustainability efforts in Quebec, this project will generate lessons that will benefit the entire Canadian dairy sector. It will also help strengthen the competitiveness of Quebec’s dairy industry by enabling it to better meet growing expectations for environmental performance,” said Roger Massicotte, President of Agropur.
“Thanks to the strength of our cooperative network and close relationships with farmers, we are able to support them in this project so their efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of their operations also generate value and contribute to the profitability of their farms,” said Richard Ferland, President of Sollio Groupe Coopératif.
“It is essential to turn today’s challenges into sustainable opportunities for the farms of tomorrow. The long-term viability of agricultural businesses depends in part on the adoption of sustainable practices, and our decarbonization service is unquestionably among the innovative and concrete solutions we are implementing to support farmers in this transition,” said Casper Kaastra, CEO of Sollio Agriculture.
“In this way, we want to recognize our members’ commitment and create the conditions needed to accelerate their transition. The program provides financial incentives of up to $16,000 per participant to support both the adoption of recognized GHG emission reduction practices and the resulting environmental performance, while promoting broader deployment of the results achieved,” added Sophie Neveux, Director, Global Sustainability at Agropur.
“This collaboration represents an important step in the development of our decarbonization offering and confirms the relevance of the support we have put in place for the benefit of agricultural farmers. Our approach, which supports farmers in adopting new practices, combines our holistic view of the farm with the local expertise of our advisors across the cooperative network,” said Maude Fournier-Farley, Senior Director, Innovation, Sollio Agriculture.
This initiative will engage 50 dairy farmers who are both Agropur members and part of Sollio’s cooperative network in Quebec to concretely demonstrate the potential for reducing on-farm GHG emissions. It will take place over a five-year period, from 2027 to 2031, during which producers will complete an annual carbon assessment to identify the sources of their farms’ GHG emissions and the results achieved. They will then have an opportunity to implement customized actions that target reduction and sequestration efforts where they can have the greatest impact.
